Naturally the picture is an enormous hit in Japan as the lost generation flocks to see itself affirmed.Other notable titles include: “The Villain,” which exposes the rise and fall of notorious “Pharma bro” Martin Shkreli by Andrew Ferguson Thomas Aguilar and Michael Ballin’s “The College Dropout,” about young Kanye West’s quest to make his first game-changing album and a biopic of Canadian chanteuse Shania Twain from Jessica Welsh. But Iwai just wants to tell the kids that he feels their pain and to proclaim that he is still one of them. If this were shown with any documentary attention, or with any indication that the kids are anything but cool, the film, even at its enormously self-indulgent length of 146 minutes, might be worth watching. Though one classmate is forced into prostitution and another is raped for playing the piano too well, though yet another is forced by bullies to root naked in a nearby paddy in emulation of the family pig, there is no revolt, just more navel gazing. The young hero of this picture, filled with New Age conceits, fits right in with the fashionable pale pastels of the photography and the "healing" music of the sound track. One of these is to retreat from harried school life into the calm of the Internet chat room and its attendant enthusiasms for such idol singers as Lily Chou-Chou.
Though himself near 40, he still sports long bleached hair and what is left of pop-star good looks. Some directors even specialize in it, among them Shunji Iwai. Another is that, with bullying as the preferred major in many junior highs, there is never any lack of adolescent drama. One reason is that these kids, living what the press calls "parasite" existences with their parents, have enough money to go see such pictures. Japan must have more films about junior high school kids than any other country.
